Abstract
797,181. Consolidating and shearing metal scrap. LINDEMANN, W. Sept. 28, 1956 [March 19, 1956], No. 29739/56. Class 83 (4). In a scrap shearing machine the scrap is compressed by plungers having separate drives so that each plunger compresses the scrap to an extend dependent on the resistance of the scrap beneath it. The scrap is fed from a tipping bucket 13 into a trough 10 along which it is pushed step-by-step by an hydraulic ram 11. The plungers 22 ... 25 in the form of rectangular cylinders slidable on pistons 28 are at each stroke of the machine lowered under their own weight on to the scrap and then hydraulically forced to compress the scrap. A guard 75 protects the plungers when inoperative. The consolidated scrap is cut into blocks by a moving blade 18, shaped as shown in Fig. 4, and a fixed blade 16, the bed 39 adjacent the fixed blade being grooved to prevent lateral movement of the scrap, The moving blade carrier 17 has extended guides 117 sliding in slideways 19 and forming a flush surface with the frame so as to provide a smooth throat. The blade carrier 17 is additionally guided by a sliding member 122 and is mounted on two pairs of hydraulic rams 141 and 147. The blade is allowed to fall under its own weight and is then forced through the scrap by hydraulic pressure in rams 141. The opposing hydraulic pressure in rams 147 prevents undue acceleration of the blade as the cut is completed. The cut blocks may be fed by a reversible conveyer 34 to an oscillating slide 36 feeding the blocks to a shears 37 positioned at right angles to the main shears. The starting position of the strokes of the blade 18 and plungers 22 ... 25 may be varied.
