Abstract

797,058. Stuffing-box substitutes. AKTIEBOLAGET GOTAVERKEN. May 23, 1956 [June 10, 1955], No. 16017/56. Class 122 (5). A stuffing box 9 for the piston-rod 10 of a reciprocating engine has a series of grooves for the reception of scraper rings 13, 18, 19 and is characterized in that the outermost of these grooves 11, 17 are in communication with separate drain passages 20, 22. An intermediate scraper ring groove 16 is in communication with a drain passage 23, separated from those of grooves 11 and 17 and packing rings 12, 15, are also provided. The drain passage 20 collects contaminated oil from the portion of the piston-rod working within the scavenge chamber 3, the drain passages 22 open direct to the crank case 7 to return clean oil scraped from the lower portion of the piston rod 10, and the drain passage 23 collects partly-contaminated oil from the intermediate groove 16, whence it is taken by a pipe 24 to an oil purifier. To obviate clogging of the rings, a supply of thin oil or solvent from a container 26 is fed to the uppermost groove 11 through a passage 25, the drain passage 20 from this groove being connected by a pipe 21 to an oil separator 29 having a drain 34. A three-way cock 28 allows the pipe 21 to be connected either to the oil separator or to a sludge tank. The oil separator 29 is connected by a pipe 32, through a non-return valve 31, to a chamber 33 between the suction and discharge valves of a scavenging air pump 4, the non-return valve being so arranged that contaminated oil may be sucked from the drain passage 20, and leakage of scavenging air to the crank-case may be reduced. The container 26 may be pressurized through a pipe 27 connected to the scavenging air chamber. Valves are provided to allow this pressure to be shut off during filling of the container, and the filler pipe to be shut off when the container is pressurized. In a modification, the two upper scraper ring grooves may be connected to the scavenging oil passage and drain passage.
