Abstract

796,212. Axial-flow fans and pumps. KONINKLIJKE MACHINEFABRIEK GEB. STORK & CO. N.V. Oct. 8, 1956 [Oct. 12, 1955], No. 30594/56. Class 110 (1). In an axial-flow fan or pump having a casing which is conically widened downstream of the impeller and connected to a discharge conduit, the widened section is provided with a cylindrical outer face at its end adjacent the discharge conduit and is movable axially through some distance into the discharge conduit. In the fan shown, the impeller shaft 6 is journalled in a bearing 5 mounted within a fairing 4 in an inlet portion 3 of the casing. The impeller 1 is surrounded by a cylindrical casing portion 2 having an inspection door 25 and connected to a conically widened diffuser 8. The diffuser 8 carries a ring 9 having a cylindrical outer face in sealing contact with a resilient ring 10 which is squeezed between a clamping ring 11 and a flange 13 on the discharge conduit 12. This arrangement permits thermal expansion of the diffuser 8. The impeller blades 18 are adjusted by turning a rod 22 which projects outside the casing, to produce axial movement of a non- rotating cylinder 19 and of a sleeve 20 which is rotatably connected to the cylinder 19 and rotates with the impeller. The sleeve 20 carries a disc 21 which is connected to the blade stems. The rod 22 is releasably connected to the cylinder 19 by a coupling 24 which is clamped tight by means of a hollow actuating rod 23 surrounding the rod 22. After releasing the coupling 24 and disconnecting a flanged joint 17, the diffuser 8 and casing portion 2 can be raised by means of cables or chains 15 passing over pulleys 16, to give access to the impeller 1. In the case of a horizontal fan or pump, the section 2, 8 may be mounted on a carriage.
