Abstract
796,140. Waterproofing. MONSANTO CHEMICALS, Ltd. Dec. 7, 1955 [Dec. 31, 1954; Aug. 30, 1955], No. 35081/55. Class 140. Porous materials are waterproofed by impregnation with an aqueous solution of a salt of lead or thorium and with a solution in an organic solvent, e.g. white spirit, of a silicone containing a polymerization catalyst in either order. The porous materials may be masonry, wood, leather, paper, and natural and synthetic textiles, the silicones may be methyl and methyl phenyl silicones. of R : Si ratio from 1.3 to 1.9 and a phenyl : methyl ratio from 0.1 to 4 and also silicones having hydrogen-bonded silicon atoms, the silicone polymerization catalysts may be alkali metal titanates as in Specification 723,989, and the lead and thorium salts may be lead acetate or lead or thorium nitrate, preferably buffered with acetic acid or an alkali metal acetate. The impregnations may be effected by immersion, brushing or spraying with or without application of vacuum or increased pressure. Polymerization may be effected on drying or accelerated by heating. For textiles the impregnating solutions, preferably the silicone solution, may also contain softening agents, waxes, mineral oils such as liquid paraffin, and melamine and urea resins. Before the silicone solution is applied, the material to be treated should be dry. Specification 796,141 also is referred to.
