A fish-plate 11 of insulating material has circular or rounded oval holes 12 large enough to pass fish bolts 15 with their keying projections and is provided with metal washer plates 13 which engage the fish-plates 11 in a non- rotatable manner and also have pear-shaped holes 14 to hold the fish bolts 15 with their keying projections in a non-rotatable manner. The metal washer plates 13 have two pearshaped holes 14 to receive adjacent fish bolts 15 and each engages in a recess 16 moulded in the fish-plates 11. The fish-plates 11 are made of laminated wood impregnated with a phenolic resin. The upper edge of the fish-plate 11 has a shallow depression 17 located beneath the joint between the two rail ends and shaped with two outer convex portions commencing tangential to the top edge of the fish-plate 11 and a central concave portion blending smoothly into the two outer convex portions. The depression varies in depth across the fish-plate 11, being deepest at the outer fish-plate face and disappearing towards the inner fish-plate face. The extremities of the depression 17 terminate with a distance equivalent to the distance between the peripheries of the inner bolt holes 12.
