796,022. Making commutators for dynamoelectric machines. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D. July 23, 1956 [Aug. 8, 1955], No. 22863/55. Class 83 (2). [Also in Group XXXV] Commutator segments are secured against centrifugal force by means of a series of rings lying in radial slots in the segments, these slots being closed by axial pressure on the segments to grip the rings. As shown in Fig. 1, the slots 2 are in the outer surface of the segments and receive rings 3 which may be of insulated aluminium. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the segments are internally slotted and threaded on rings 5 having beaded edges 6. Initially the segment-slots have narrow grooves at each corner to relieve stresses when the segments are being axially compressed to the form shown in Fig. 4. The bead may be solid or may be rolled from a flat disc or discs, it may be filled with a wire, and the rings may have flanges at their inner edges for fitting on a mounting hub. If the shaft does not pass through the commutator the last ring may be replaced by a disc.
