Abstract
1350743 Brake discs BENDIX CORP 16 Feb 1973 [17 March 1972] 7812/73 Heading F2E An annular carbon disc has circumferentially spaced slots extending inwardly from one periphery to define sections, each having a keyway alternating with intermediate sections so that the keyway sections are free to deflect circumferentially. The slots 64 extend from the inner or outer periphery for the disc to be a stator or rotor disc respectively, and are parallel for each keyway section 56 or converge toward the periphery. The slots 64 are narrow at one part of their length to limit deflection under braking load. The keyways 60 of the sections 56 may lie beyond the associated periphery or lie within the line of the periphery, but beyond the friction surface, part of the intermediate sections acting as a heat sink. A carbon belt or tape may be added to the exterior of the sections for reinforcement. Such carbon rotors and stators form a multi-disc brake, Fig. 1, for an aircraft wheel 10 having a fixed axle 14 with a support 16 for a torque tube 34 providing a fixed stop 40 and carrying peripheral hydraulic actuators 18, the pistons 22 of which having heat insulating blocks 24 attached thereto.
