Abstract

579,172. Disc brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. June 30, 1943, Nos. 10622 and 10623. Convention dates, July 4, 1942, and Aug. 6, 1942. [Class 103 (i)] Discs for disc brakes comprise a series of segments each engaging anchorage means and each held in assembly with other segments by disconnectible means which are independent of the anchorage means. The brake for an aircraft land wheel shown in Figs. 1, 2 comprises rotor friction discs 17, 18 slidably keyed to bars 16 secured to the wheel 11, and stator discs 24, 25, 26. The disc 26 is secured by bolts 27 and pins 34 to a part 19 fixed to the non-rotatable axle 22 and the discs 24, 25 are slidably keyed to tubular bars 23 through which the bolts 27 pass. Release springs 32 are provided. Application is effected hydraulically by an annular piston 29 carried by the member 19 and acting on the disc 24. The discs 24, 25, 26 may, as shown, be lined with friction material, preferably non- metallic. The discs 17, 18 may consist of friction linings of powdered iron bonded by a layer of non-ferrous metal to a central steel disc. All the discs may however be unlined. The discs 17, 18 are each composed of spaced segments 35. These may be connected together by spring members 36, Fig. 2 which yield to allow circumferential approach of the segment edges, by similarly shaped solid links or by dove-tailed shaped projections on one side edge of a segment loosely fitting a correspondingly shaped recess in the adjacent side edge of the adjoining segment. In another construction, Fig. 4, the segments 35a are grooved at the inner edge to receive a metal ring 36a which prevents inward radial displacement of the discs. Or the segments may be interconnected by T-shaped projections 127, Fig. 6, formed on a ring 126 and received with clearance in grooves in the edges of the segments. The lining of discs 24, 25, 26 may also be segmented as shown. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 contains also the subject matter of Specification 579,799, [Group XXVI]. This subject matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
