Abstract
795,989. Extruding. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. Feb. 9, 1956 [May 31, 1955], No. 4065/56. Class 83 (4). In the extrusion of heated metal billets 6, a preformed homogeneous disc 12 of agglomerated glass powder is used at the entrance to the die orifice 5. The billet, which may be of stainless steel, is heated externally to the extrusion temperature and a quantity of glass powder is placed in its bore 7. The billet is then rolled over an asbestos pad coated with glass powder whereby during the rolling, layers 9, 10 of glass are formed on the inner and outer surfaces of the billet. The glass disc 12 may be formed from powdered window glass with a binder of sodium silicate which is compressed in a die assembly 20, 22, 24, Fig. 2 (not shown), to give the required shape. The bore 13 of the disc is equal to or slightly larger than the diameter of the die orifice 5. For extruding relatively low melting point metals, glass powder having a low softening point is used and in this case phosphoric acid is used as a binder. Alternatively instead of using a binder, the disc may be made by sintering a compacted or uncompacted body of glass powder. Examples are given of the grain sizes of the glass powder, the density of the disc, and the dimension of a particular disc. Comparison is made between the use of a glass disc of the invention and a pad of glass fibres. Specifications 607,285 and 784,492 are referred to.
