Abstract
795,906. Magnetic compositions. MEDVEDIEFF, S. April 24, 1956 [April 27, 1955], No. 12562/56. Class 38 (2). A material suitable for use as magnetic recording medium is made by heating at about 1050‹ C. a mixture in molecular proportions of ferric oxide 40-50 per cent, magnesium oxide 10-40 per cent, cobalt oxide 10-40 per cent, zinc oxide 0-15 per cent, quenching the product in water and then grinding to powder. The magnesium oxide is preferably introduced by starting with magnesium carbonate, the preferred starting ratios in gram molecules being 45 Fe 2 0 3 ; 20-25 CoO; 15-30 MgC0 3 and 0-10 ZnO. In one example, suitable weights of the first three materials were ground for fourteen hours with water in a ball-mill, dried, screened, compressed into a cylinder sintered at 1050‹ C. for one hour and fragmented in water. After regrinding, drying and screening, the powder was heated at 250‹ C. for 12 hours in a magnetic field of 2000 oersteds and cooled to room temperature in one hour. Modifications are described in which suitable proportions of these materials and zinc oxide are used.
