Abstract

795,783. Resilient mountings. WELLS & CO., Ltd., A., and UNITED-CARR FASTENER CORPORATION. Oct. 9, 1956 [Nov. 22, 1955], No. 33399/55. Class 108(3) An anti-vibration mounting comprises a colunnar member 24 extending through an opening in a base member 12, and two sets of closely coiled helical springs 38, 40, each extending between the member 12 and a respective spring retainer 32 which is free to rotate on, but is restricted against axial movement relative to, the member 24, the springs 38, 40, being under no longitudinal tension, and having their points of attachment to the spring retainers 32 offset circumferentially, and to a uniform extent, in relation to their points of attachment to the member 12 when the mounting is unloaded. In operation, on receiving a downward load upon the member 24, the springs 38, 40, are deformed into the position shown in Fig. 8. This is accompanied by rotation of the retainers 32, the consequential frictional resistance providing a measure of damping. Further damping is provided by frictional engagement between adjacent springs, and by the provision of a damping cage consisting of discs 46, 48, and a spring 50. In a modified construction of damping cage (Fig. 15, not shown), the discs 46, 48, are replaced by respective cups, and the spring 50 acts on the cups through the intermediary of abutment washers or further cups. The peripheries of the cups may be radially slotted. Deflection is limited by the provision of radially extending pairs of resilient stop members 28, 30, the latter being the more resilient. In a modification (Figs. 13 to 16, not shown) the more resilient stop underlies the more rigid stop 26. Specifications 571,026 and 740,519 are referred to.
