795,231. Apparatus for heating or cooling granulated materials. DUNFORD & ELLIOTT PROCESS ENGINEERING, Ltd. Feb. 8, 1955 [Nov. 12, 1953], No. 31445/53. Class 64(2) A device for heating or cooling granular materials comprises a device which is rotatable in a trough of liquid and is formed on its outside with longitudinal grooves for scooping liquid from the trough during the rotation of the drum. The drum 1 is mounted to rotate on pairs of rollers 3 in a trough 4, the grooves 8 on its outer surface being formed so as to be slightly helical with respect to the drum. The vanes 9, formed by the projection of the grooves into the inside of the drum serve to propel the material being treated from the inlet through the drum as the latter rotates. Provision may be made for passing a current of air through the drum in order to assist in the cooling or heating effect, and each groove may be provided with a gutter to assist the scooping liquid from the trough. When the drum is being used for cooling purposes, means may be provided for spraying its outer surface with liquid and a hood having a fan and ducting may be provided for removing vapour which develops from the evaporation of the film of liquid sprayed on to the surface of the drum.
