Abstract

794,833. Pipe joints. HUDSON, R. June 22, 1956 [June 24, 1955; Nov. 19, 1955], Nos. 18314/55 and 33159/55. Class 99(1). A fitting preferably made of brass, comprises outer and inner tubes 13,12, Fig. 1, respectively, forming a socket to receive a pipe end 10 made of thermoplastic material, e.g., polythene, polystyrene or cellulose acetate, cavities 17 formed in the inner surface of the outer tube being filled with material integrating with or formed from the pipe itself. As shown the fitting joins two pipes 10, 11, the tube 12 having a shoulder 14 which serves to interspace the pipes. The tube 13 has a short length 15 at each end, of diameter equal to that of the pipes, and a shoulder 16 which fits on the shoulder 14. The inner surface of the tube 13 between the shoulder 16 and the part 15 is of greater diameter than the pipes thus forming a cavity 17. In assembling, tubes 12, 13 are fitted together, the tube 13 is heated, the pipes are introduced and axial pressure applied to the pipes the ends of which expand, become soft and fill the cavities 17. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) serrated grooves replace the cavity 17, in Fig. 3 (not shown) sockets screwed into the ends of the outer tube are tightened after the heat is applied and in Fig. 4, the pipe ends are bevelled at 24 where they abut, an internal recess 29 in an outer tube 25 being filled with polythene which is bonded to both pipe ends. In Fig. 5, a shoulder 36 has channels providing communication from one side to the other, serrations 38 and the channels in the shoulder 36 being filled when the pipes are pressed together, the material in the serrations preventing withdrawal of the pipes and that in the channels preventing rotation of the pipes relative to the coupling. Fig. 7 shows a fitting for jointing a thermoplastic pipe 42 to a metal pipe or a container. The end of the pipe is inserted in the cavity between a tube 47 and a heated tube 45, axial pressure is applied to force the softened pipe end into the cavity and the tube 45 is tightened onto a union member 43.
