Abstract

794,556. Making fibrous tubes. BROWN CO. Dec. 3, 1956 [Dec. 5, 1955], No. 36861/56. Class 99(2). Apparatus for progressively pressing and compacting wet fibrous tubing 18 upon a mandrel 16, comprises an endless, flexible, belt-like conveyer pervious to water for supporting and advancing the tubing and mandrel, means for advancing the conveyer and for wrapping the latter about the tubing to envelop the tubing completely, and means for pressing and compacting the tubing against the mandrel to express water from the tubing and through the conveyer. The conveyer has a width at least equal to the periphery of the tubing. As shown, the perforate or porous belt 10 of woven or braided nylon is carried on a pair of pulleys 12, 14, one or both of which are driven, the mandrels 16 mounting tubes 18 being supplied to the upper reach of the belt which is progressively wrapped about the tubes by horizontal supporting rollers 20, 22 and 24, vertically mounted rollers 26, 28 and, above the roller 24, a roller 30. One or more of the rollers are driven. The pressing device which engages the wrapped mandrels comprises pairs of driven sprockets 40 mounted at the ends of a frame member 36 and carrying an endless chain 42 and, mounted on the links of each chain, a number of pressing members 44 having perforated; arcuate faces 46 ; carried by the frame 36 are supporting rails 48 moved and adjusted by cam means 50, and provided with sloping terminal portions 52, 54 so that the chains and segments are urged gradually inward towards the mandrels as the latter are advanced. The belt 10 automatically unfolds gradually to leave the compacted and densified tubes 18 free to be removed from the apparatus. Two or more belts arranged with overlapping margins may be employed.
