Abstract

794,551. Closures for resisting fluid pressure. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. June 21, 1956. [July 6, 1955], No. 19297/56. Class 123(1) The closure 18 for a pressure vessel 10 has a grooved flange 20 seating on a gasket disposed on a correspondingly grooved flange 14 around the vessel rim, the flanges 20, 14 being formed externally with respective inclined portions 22, 24, to receive C-shaped clamps 26 arranged adjacent to each other and completely surrounding the periphery of the vessel. Each clamp has inclined surfaces 28, 30 respectively matching the flange portions 22, 24 so that application of a radially inward force on the clamps results in a compressing reaction on the sealing gasket. The radial force is applied simultaneously to all the clamps by a ring 36 having internal inclined surfaces 32A, 34A which engage outer inclined surfaces 32, 34 on the clamps when the ring is forced upwardly, the ring being driven by a number of jackscrews 42 mounted on brackets 44 disposed at spaced positions around the vessel 10. The screw members 48 of the jackscrews are driven upwards together by internally threaded pinions 52 which are rotated simultaneously by a toothed ring 54, the latter being driven around by a shaft 62 carrying a pinion 64 engaging teeth cut on the underside of the ring. To release the clamps from engagement with the flanges 14, 20 the clamps are supported on a pivot ring 38 and provided with lower external projections 40 which are engaged by the bottom edge of the ring 36 during its downward travel, this causing the clamps to pivot outwardly to allow the closure 18 to be removed. The unit is readily capable of operation from a remote position since the driving force to seal or. unseal the vessel is applied at a single point only.
