Abstract

794,406. Anti-microbial paper. DOW CHEMICAL CO. Oct. 16, 1956, No. 31489/56. Class 96. In the manufacture of alkaline paper which resists microbial attack, there is added to the pulp suspension, e.g. 0.5 per cent of a pentachlorophenol compound, and a molar excess, e.g. 1¢ to 3 times, of a long-chain aliphatic amine having at least one hydrogen atom attached to the amine nitrogen, the pH value being brought to 7.2 to 9.8, e.g. by adding calcium carbonate filler. As amine may be used decyl-, dodecyl-, tetradecyl, pentadecyl, hexadecyl-, heptadecyl-, octadecyl-, or didodecylamine, or octadecenyl- or dodecylmethyl-amine, or salts thereof, e.g. hydrochlorides, acetates, formates, tartrates, citrates, phosphates, acid sulphates or hydrobromides, &c., and the pentachlorophenol may be the free compound or the sodium, potassium, or triethanolamine salt thereof. The filler may alternatively be magnesium oxide or titanium dioxide.
