Abstract

794,286. Captive balloons. LEA BRIDGE INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Nov. 1, 1956 [Jan. 9, 1956], No. 688/56. Class 4. A captive balloon comprises an envelope 1 which is a body of revolution about a tube 3 connecting upper and lower surfaces. The body 1 is surrounded by a further inflatable compartment 4 provided with peripheral vanes 5 which, under surrounding air movements, cause the balloon to rotate about an axle 2 secured in tube 3 by bearings 6. The lower end of the axle is connected by a universal joint 9 to a mooring cable 8. A radar cupola 7 may be supported by the cable which would then be provided with a further universal connection 10. The rotational movement of the balloon imparts stability thereto and this may be further assisted by increasing the centrifugal effect by filling the compartment 4 with a gas heavier than that used for the body 1.
