Abstract

The invention comprises 4-amino-3-nitrobenzenesulphonamides in which each of the nitrogen atoms of the amino and sulphonamide groups carries an aryl substituent, said compound having a substituent containing an alcoholic hydroxy group, in particular dyes of the formula: <FORM:0794178/IV (b)/1> (in which R and R1 are monocyclic aryl hydrocarbon radicals and R11 is an hydroxyalkyl group of up to 4 carbon atoms) and a process of making them by reacting a 4-halogen-3-nitrobenzene-sulphonyl halide with an arylamine to give a 4-halogen-3-nitrobenzene-sulphon-arylamide and reacting the latter with an arylamine, either or both arylamines containing a substituent carrying an alcoholic hydroxy group. The aryl groups may carry substituents such as alkoxy, alkoxyalkoxy, halogen, acylamino, hydroxy or acyl. The products dye cellulose esters or ethers, nylon, polyesters, or polyacrylonitriles, using the usual swelling and dispersing agents, and the dyed materials may be aftertreated with amine-formaldehyde condensates, in presence of an acidic catalyst, according to Specification 794,179. In examples, 4-chloro-3-nitrobenzenesulphonyl chloride is reacted in acetone and in aqueous dispersion with N-phenyl-N-b -hydroxyethylamine or p-b -hydroxyethylaniline to give the corresponding 4-chloro-3-nitrobenzenesulphonanilides, which are then condensed with aniline or p-phenelidine. Further examples describe the dyeing of cellulose acetate and aftertreatment of the dyed fabric with N.N1-di - (methoxymethyl) - ethylene urea, an organic amine hydrochloride, and formaldehyde.
