Abstract

Gamma-(aryloxy) butyric acids are made by heating a sodium phenolate with butyrolactone in the presence of a solvent or liquid diluent, water being substantially excluded from the reaction mixture. Solvents or diluents specified are mono- and di-chlorobenzene. Examples illustrate the preparation of gamma-phenoxy-, gamma-(2-methyl-4-chloro-phenoxy)-, gamma-(2 : 4-dichloro-phenoxy)-, and gamma-(2-, 3-, and 4 - methyl - phenoxy) - butyric acids. Specification 758,980 is referred to.
