Abstract
Organohalogenomonosilanes are obtained from organohalogenopolysilanes by heating the polysilane with a quaternary ammonium or phosphonium halide of the formula R14NX or R14PX, where R1 is alkyl or aryl and X is halogen. The invention is particularly concerned with the treatment of organodisilanes or mixtures containing them, e.g. those obtained from the reaction of hydrocarbon halides with heated silicon as described in Specification 575,667, [Group IV]. Such a mixture is used in the examples and comprises large amounts of dimethyltetrachlorodisilanes and trimethyltrichlorodisilanes and small amounts of methylpentachlorodisilane, tetramethyldichlorosilanes, methylchloromonosilanes, methyldisiloxane and disilylmethylene compounds. The products are mixtures of methyl chloromonosilanes. Suitable quaternary compounds are Me4NCl, BzMe3Nl, Bu4NCl, PhMe3NBr, Me4PBr, BzMe3PCl and Et4Pl. They may be used in amounts of about 0.5 to 10 per cent by weight of the polysilane. Reaction temperatures are generally from 50 DEG to 150 DEG C. and preferably reflux. At temperatures higher than reflux, pressure apparatus must be employed. The use of solvents is not precluded. Specifications 666,359, 685,656, [Group IV (b)], and 764,847 also are referred to.
