Abstract
793,835. Welding by fusion. BRITISH OXYGEN CO., Ltd. Jan. 30, 1957 [Feb. 14, 1956], No. 4645/56. Class 83 (4). In gas shielded are welding of metals having a refractory oxide skin, e.g. aluminium, the weld pool is vibrated at at least 10 cycles per second during welding and subsequent cooling. A spot-welding torch, Fig. 2, has a laminated gas nozzle 20 arranged to bear upon the plates 1, 2 being welded. Notches 22 or holes in the end of the nozzle 20 serve as outlets for the shielding argon. Alternating current passed. through a coil 21 vibrates the nozzle and thus the weld metal. The nozzle 20 and the body of the torch are separated by a resilient gasket 13. As shown in Fig. 3, an electromagnetic vibrator 31 is mounted on the plates to be welded or is used to vibrate the support for the workpieces. Ultrasonic vibrators may be used. The Provisional Specification states that for spot or seam welds, vibrated plate or strip backings may be used.
