793,685. Making shell cases and like containers; stamping. FORGES ET ATELIERS DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES DE JEUMONT. Nov. 30, 1956 [March 9, 1956] No. 36691/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A machine for stamping shell-cases and other containers comprises an hydraulic unit including an inflatable bag or bladder for insertion in a container, a cylinder and piston for inflating the bag and effecting the stamping of the container by a high-pressure impulse, the hydraulic unit being operated at high speed by dropping a weight on the piston and arranged in such a manner as to co-operate successively with a plurality of interchangeable dies. The machine comprises a rotatable turret 1 containing dies 3a, 3b, 3c, the crown portion of each being tapered internally and provided with slits 32 for enabling air to escape from the die cavity during the stamping operation. The hydraulic unit comprises a cylinder 4, a piston 5 and an inflatable rubber bag 6 attached to the cylinder 4. A tubular stem 7 provided with orifices 8 is also attached to the cylinder and extends into the bag. At its lower end the stem 7 has a slidable head 9 attached to the bag by a disc 10. The hydraulic unit is guided for reciprocable movement and means are provided for indexing the unit with the dies of the rotatable turret. When the reciprocable piston is in the upper position in the cylinder 4 a groove 41 is uncovered which communicates with a fluid reserve cavity 42 vented to atmosphere which accumulates any fluid leakage between the piston and cylinder. The normal level of the fluid, e.g. glycerine, in the unit is indicated at 44 in the reserve cavity. A weight 11 guided on columns 12 and operated as disclosed in prior Specification 725,854 applies the working stroke to the piston 5. Hydraulic shockabsorbers 15 prevent excessive travel of the weight 11. In operation, an unformed shellcase is placed in the die 3b of the turret and the turret rotated to index the shell-case under the hydraulic unit to effect the stamping operation. Further rotation of the turret brings the formed shell-case under an ejector 18 and a new shellcase under the hydraulic forming unit. Specification 726,618 also is referred to.
