Abstract

793,297. Nuclear reactors. ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA, Ltd. July 17, 1956 [July 22, 1955], No. 22145/56. Class 39(4). The coolant from a nuclear reactor is monitored to detect neutron emission from I<SP>137</SP> or Br<SP>87</SP> that would arise from any fuel element sheath failing by perforation. To reduce background of neutrons from N<SP>17</SP> produced by O<SP>17</SP> (n,p.) the coolant is not monitored until a time greater than the half-life of the N<SP>17</SP> has passed after leaving the netron flux in the reactor. When heavy water is used as a coolant, Fig. 2, γ-rays produced by decay of N<SP>16</SP>, the result of O<SP>16</SP> (n,p.) and of Na<SP>24</SP>, the result of A1<SP>27</SP> (n,d.), cause the production of neutrons by photo-disintegration of deuterium. As the heavy water is recirculated, Na<SP>24</SP> has to be extracted by ion exchange, at 205, and the monitoring is carried out on a branch 207, with a delay greater than the half-life of N<SP>16</SP>. The detector, B<SP>10</SP>F 3 , records thermal neutrons, and a jacket 214 of ordinary water moderates the neutrons emitted, without increasing the D(y, n) reaction as would happen in a large vessel containing the heavy water.
