Abstract
793,045. Optical systems. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Oct. 21, 1955 [Nov. 3, 1954], No. 31751/54. Class 97(1) In a dichroic mirror comprising a plurality of substantially transparent layers alternately of high and low refractive index and each having an optical thickness giving a one ,quarter wavelength phase delay at a frequency of light to be reflected by the mirror and alternate layers having the same refractive index, one or each of the first or last layers has therein a substantially transparent layer of optical thickness half that of the other layers of refractive index different from that of the external medium adjacent thereto and equal to the refraction index of the penultimate arc of the first mentioned layers. As shown layers 2-6 of quarter-wavelength thickness are alternately of magnesium fluoride and inc zinc sulphide while further layers 7, 8 of zinc sulphide of half the optical thickness of the layers 2-6 are deposited respectively on the glass support and on the layers 6. An additional layer 10 of quarter wavelength thickness and a refraction index the geometric mean between the effective refractive index of the filter and that of the external medium may be provided and a further glass plate 9 attached thereto. The magnesium fluoride may be replaced by arsenous oxide or barium chloride.
