Abstract
792,976. Laminated sheet materials. RASMUSSEN, O. B. May 23, 1955 [June 4, 1954], No. 14740/55. Class 140. Tear-resistant sheet materials are formed by adhering together thin, uniaxially cold-stretched foils of nylon, crystalline terephthalates, polyethylene, or crystalline polyvinylidene esters with the directions of stretch in the different layers crossing. The layers are caused to adhere either by rendering them self-adhesive, e.g. by treatment with a swelling agent which is removed as by evaporating when the layers are pressed together, or by a soft elastic adhesive layer comprising polyisobutylene with tackifiers such as polyvinyl ethers. The layers may contain plasticizers. Wide stretch-oriented layers may be formed by joining together narrow bands, e.g. 1 to 10 cms. width, in edge-to-edge or overlapping parallel disposition. The bands may be formed by helically slitting longitudinally-stretched extruded tubes of the foil materials.
