1387701 Heat-sealable tapes; laminates NIPPON PETROCHEMICALS CO Ltd 22 Sept 1972 [25 Sept 1971] 44087/72 Headings B5B and B5N [Also in Division D1] Stretched, heat-sealable tapes are produced from a laminate composed of a core layer containing an orientable polymer and another layer composed of a heat-sealable non-orientable polymer which is sealable at a temperature below that at which the orientation of the core layer is destroyed. Where there are more than two layers at least one of the outermost layers is such a heat-sealable layer. The laminate is stretched and slit into the tapes, the stretching being longitudinal and uniaxial and the slitting being either before or after the stretching. Laminates exemplified have core layers of high density polyethylene and polypropylene bonded to ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer and low-density polyethylene respectively. They are produced by coextrusion, the lamination being inside the die. It is also stated that the laminates may be formed from pre-formed films, either by the loss of adhesives or by bonding them together by use of heat and pressure. In Example 2, a fabric is woven from tapes made of polypropylene bonded to low density polyethylene and when the polyethylene layers feed each other they are bonded together. The fabric is then laminated with a sheet of Kraft paper.
