Abstract

1,139,036. Laminated plastics materials. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 1 Aug., 1966 [2 Aug., 1965 (3)], No. 34452/66. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions A4 and B8] A packaging film is formed by laminating outer layers of a polyolefin, e.g. polyethylene to an inner layer of barrier resin, e.g. a halogenated hydrocarbon such as vinylidene chloride polymer. The layers may be joined by adhesives. The laminate may be formed by heat plastifying the barrier resin and the polyolefin and deforming the latter to form a layer about a core of the barrier resin. The whole is then deformed into a stream and then into a film and finally cooled. As an example of a five-layer film for packaging cigars (see Division B8), the outer layers are of low density polyethylene glued to the inner layer by a copolymer consisting of ethylene and vinyl acetate. The inner layer consists of a 0À2 mil thickness of vinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride, acetyl tributylcitrate, epoxidized soya bean oil and 4-tertiary butyl-salol, secured to a 0À1 mil thickness of a similar ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer. Other barrier resins are fluorocarbon, fluorohydrocarbon and fluorohalohydrocarbon polymers.
