Abstract

1298688 Laminates; seaming non-metallic sheet material PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO 15 April 1970 [16 April 1969] 18021/70 Headings B5K and B5N [Also in Division B8] An article of manufacture e.g. a package comprises a substrate 4 e.g. a tray having a surface composed of high density polyethylene and, heat-sealed to said surface, a peel-off laminate comprising a backing layer 1 composed of a thermoplastic polyamide, polyester, polycarbonate or polyolefine and a surface layer 2 heat-sealed to said high density polyethylene surface, said surface heat-sealed layer having a thickness in the range 0À2 to 1À5 mils. and being composed of a thermoplastic polymer of ethylene having a density, melting point, tensile strength and tear strength all lower than those of the backing layer. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, the article comprises a blister package, the substrate being of cardboard coated with a high density polyethylene. Specified backing layers are polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon-6, nylon-11, nylon-12, nylon-6/6 and nylon-6/10. An additional material e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, aluminium or cellulosic material may be laminated to the reverse surface of the backing layer. The laminate may be made by extrusion on to the backing layer.
