Abstract

Packaging materials comprise a laminate of two oriented polyolefin films bonded together such that their respective directions of orientation are at an angle to each other, bonded to a stiffer material such as a metal foil, kraft paper etc., in such a way that the bond between the polyolefin laminate and the stiffer material is stronger than the bond between the layers in the polyolefin laminate. The oriented polyolefin film is pref. of low press. polyethylene or isotactic polypropylene. The layer of stiffer material is pref. provided with a coating of heat sealable material such as high press. polyethylene. As an alternative, the layer of stiffer material may itself be of a heat sealable material. The laminates have improved resistance to tearing, but when a nick is made at the edge a tear propagates easily along the direction of orientation of one of the oriented films in the laminate. In a partic. application, the laminate is folded over and heat sealed at the edges to form a sealed sachet. A nick is made in one of the seams to indicate to the user that the resulting package is opened by tearing the sachet along the line indicated by the nick.
