Abstract

A moulding powder, suitable, e.g., for the cold pressing and sintering process claimed in Specification 792,954, comprises two polyamides of different melting-points, the lower melting one being 15-70 per cent by weight of the mixture and at least the higher melting one having average particle dimensions not greater than 40 microns. Up to 85 per cent of the total volume of the powder may be finely-divided inert filler, e.g. diamond dust, silica, carborundum, chalk, alundum, tungsten carbide, copper, lead, iron, carbon, graphite, molybdenum disulphide, ceramic materials, e.g. titanium dioxide or titanates, magnetic metals or oxides, or polytetrafluorethylene. Suitable polyamides are polyhexamethylene adipamide or sebacamide and polycaprolactam. The polyamide powders may be prepared by precipitation from solution (as in Specifications 690,936, 691,114 and 740,356). The compositions may be granulated. In an example, polyhexamethylene adipamide powder (M.P. 271 DEG C.) was prepared from clean waste nylon and polyhexamethylene sebacamide (M.P. 224 DEG C.) from virgin material. 70 parts of the first powder were mixed with 20 of the second, tableted, ground and sieved to pass an 80 mesh screen. The composition may be used for sintered articles or for fusion coatings. Specification 763,939 and 763,940 also are referred to.
