Abstract
792,920. Printed circuits. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 22, 1955 [June 25, 1954], No. 18067/55. Class 37. A printed circuit is made by electroplating a separable metal layer 2 of a thickness not exceeding 10 microns on a temporary metal base-plate 1, providing a non-conductive resist 3 to the metal layer in the negative image of the desired pattern, depositing metal 4 on the uncovered parts of the metal layer 2, applying the patterned side of the base to an insulating layer 5, separating the base 1 from the layer 2 and removing the layer 2 by chemical and/or mechanical action. The plate 1 may be of stainless steel and the layer 2 of copper. The resist 3 may be formed by covering the layer 2 with polyvinyl-butyral rendered light-sensitive by ammonium chromate. This is exposed under a transparency of the desired pattern, the non- exposed portions being subsequently removed. The pattern 4 may be deposited on the uncovered copper by electroplating, if desired in two layers, for example a layer of rhodium, gold, silver or tin-lead alloy, followed by copper. The insulation 5 may comprise a stack of paper soaked in cresol resin against which the patterned base 1 is pressed in a heated press which cures the resin and presses the pattern into the insulation. The steel plate is removed from the copper layer 2 and the latter is dissolved in a ferric chloride bath. The resist 3 is swollen in ethanol and then removed mechanically. Alternatively, the resist 3 may be removed before the pattern is transferred to the insulation 5. Specification 639,178 is referred to.
