Abstract

A raw mix for shaped refractories comprises boron nitride and one or more silicides of a transition metal. An auxiliary metal may also be present. Both types of metal are defined. The mix is heated under pressure and the product contains reaction products of the components. They can also be shaped in the cold and heated in an inert atmosphere. Specified silicides are those of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, columbium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum and tungsten. Specifications 742,326 and 777,000 [both in Group III] are referred to.
