Abstract
792,603. Treating and silencing exhausts. FUX, W. Nov. 17, 1955 [Nov. 19, 1954; Sept. 9, 1955]. No. 32985/55. Class 7(2) [Also in Group XL(a)] Air, supplied by a funnel 6, Fig. 1, directed towards the front of a motor vehicle, passes through inclined vanes 7 to form with exhaust gases from a tube 2 a swirling mixture the air in which is ozonized as it traverses electrodes 12, 13 between which a high-voltage intermittent electric discharge is passed by an apparatus 16, the ozone causing substantially complete oxidation of the gases which may also . be ignited by sparking between the electrodes 11. 12 and which pass to silencer 15. The tube 9 is of refractory ceramic material and may be jacketed for heat dissipation. In Fig. 5 a blower supplies the air and the tube 9 is of metal and acts to earth the electrode 11, the positive battery pole and the left-hand ends of the primary and secondary coils of the apparatus 16 also being earthed; the blower may be driven by the engine ignition dynamo, and the apparatus 16 be replaced by the engine ignition coil. In a modification, air supplied at 33, Fig. 8, is. ozonized at 36 before mixing in a chamber 40 with exhaust gases supplied from a chamber 31 via tapering nozzles 43, the mixture then passing through tapering nozzles 45 in a refractory ceramic partition 41 which may mount igniting means 44. Reference is made to ignition of the ozonized mixture by a flame or an incandescent body, and to use of devices according to the invention as motor vehicle exhaust silencers.
