Abstract

Sand particles are coated with a phenolic resin prepared by condensing phenol and formaldehyde in a mol. ratio of from 1 : 1.3 to 1 : 1.5 in the presence of ammonia, by dissolving the resin in a solvent, e.g. methylated spirits, mixing with sand and evaporating off the solvent. In Example 2, a resin prepared by condensing together phenol, aqueous formaldehyde, aqueous ammonia and caustic soda was dissolved in methylated spirits, sand being added and the solvent evaporated at 65 DEG C. The slightly aggregated product was slightly ground with pestle and mortar. The resulting product may be used in the preparation of shell moulds.ALSO:A composition for use in shell moulding processes comprises a mixture of a finely-divided refractory material and a phenolic resin, prepared by the condensation of phenol and formaldehyde in the proportion of 1 mol. phenol to from 1.3 to 1.5 mols. of formaldehyde in the presence of ammonia. Specified refractory materials are sand, sillimanite or fireclay. Resin of a sufficiently small particle size can be mixed directly with the refractory material or the resin can be dissolved in a solvent, e.g. methylated spirits and mixed with the refractory, the solvent being removed by evaporation. In the examples: (1) phenol, aqueous formaldehyde, aqueous ammonia and sodium hydroxide were mixed and heated, the liquid resin being allowed to cool and solidify and then crushed. The resin then being mixed with sand; (2) the resin of Example (1) was dissolved in methylated spirits, sand added and the solvent evaporated at 65 DEG C. The product was lightly ground. Examples 4 and 5 describe the preparation of shell moulds from the compositions by conventional processes.ALSO:Finely divided refractory material, e.g., sand, sillimanite or fireclay is mixed with a phenolic resin prepared by the condensation of phenol and formaldehyde in a mol ratio of from 1 : 1,3 to 1 : 1,5 in the presence of ammonia to produce shell moulding compositions.
