In a method of forming a lubricant soap-like coating on metal for drawing, rolling, stamping, &c. in which the metal is successively contacted with molten alkali metal hydroxide and a fatty acid, the coating is heat-treated to remove any unreacted fatty substance and to provide a more uniform surface which is difficult to remove by abrasion. The subject-matter is substantially as described in Specification 792,421, but the coated wires are subsequently passed through furnaces at temperatures from 1000-2000‹ F. at rates of from 10-20 feet per minute to bake the coating without substantially heating the metal.
