Abstract
Normally liquid acidic halogenated hydrocarbons are purified by passing into a synthetic organic ion-exchange resin inert with respect to the halogenated hydrocarbon but attractive to ionic impurities therein, and thereafter separating the halogenated hydrocarbon from the resin. In examples, perchloroethylene is passed through previously wetted beds of basic polystyrene-quaternary amine type resins or phenolformaldehyde type "anion" resin in hydroxyl forms, and the acidity, measured after various runs, is reduced to about pH 6.3-7.0; trichloroethylene is passed through anion - exchange resins of acidic polystyrene quaternary amine type in hydroxyl form which may be regenerated and dried, or a weakly-basic phenolformaldehyde anion-type resin after re-generating and drying, the pH being raised in all cases by several points. Other resins specified as useful include sulphonated polystyrene and phenol-formaldehyde and styrene-vinyl chloride copolymers, and products from amines and cross-linked glycidyl-acrylic esters. Strongly or weakly basic resins may be employed in their basic form and acidic resins may be employed in their acidic form. Other liquid halogenated hydrocarbons including carbon tetrachloride and chloroform may be purified by the process.
