Abstract

791,935. Making bucket-type containers. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. Aug. 9, 1956 [Sept. 26 1955], No. 24471/56. Class 83 (2). In making bucket-type containers a method of connecting a domed bail-attaching ear to a body blank comprises flattening a peripheral bead, formed at the base of the ear into interlocking engagement with a concentric beadengaging wall formed in the blank. A tubular bead 5 formed at the base of a domed ear 2, Fig. 2 is flattened by a press-tool 18 to deform the cylindrical side wall 13 of recess 11 in a container body blank 4, to effect an interlock between the ear and the blank Fig. 3. A boss 14 may be formed in the bottom 12 of the recess 11 to locate the ear concentrically. Curved fillets 16 and 17 are provided to permit slight movement between the rigid ear and the blank during subsequent bending. The bend 5 may be formed outwardly as in Fig. 2 or alternatively may be formed inwardly. In a modification the side wall 13 of the recess may be preformed at an acute angle to the bottom 12 of the recess, in which case on flattening the bead as before there is no appreciable further deformation of the side wall.
