Abstract

791,721. Surgical dilating appliances. SURGIC CO., Ltd. Feb. 25, 1957 [March 3, 1956], No. 6769/56. Class 81 (2). A device for opening a vein or other duct for transfusion &c. comprises a tapered, channelled member carrying a hollow needle at its narrow end. Preferably two tapered members are employed to facilitate dilation of the incision. One such member 13 mounted on a block 17 carries a needle 15 at its narrow end and a second tapered member 21 fits against it and is located by studs on block 17 engaging holes in the block 23. In use the needle 15 opens the vein and the incision is further opened by pressing the tapered members into it. Then, after removal of the member 21, a polyethylene tube is introduced through the open side of the member 13. If desired, a further needle 20 may be passed through the appliance and into the vein to be used as a guide. In other forms of the device the two tapered members are detachably hinged together.
