Abstract
791,559. Feeding sheets. GOLDING. W. F. Aug. 1. 1956 [Aug. 2, 1955], No. 22188/55. Class 100(1) Sheet-carriers; grippers:-Sheets 12 of cardboard &c. are fed to an embossing &c. machine by a number of gripper devices 5 on a pair of endless chains 4 passing over pulleys 7, 8, the sheets being accepted at position 9 and fed to position 10 for operation thereon by the machine parts 2, 3, and released at position 11. As shown in Figs. 1 and 6, each device 5 comprises a cross bar 13, secured to the chains 4, forming a common lower jaw of the gripper, and a number of upper jaws which cooperate with the bar 13. The latter jaws are in the form of leaf springs 14 which are secured to the leading edge of the bar 13 at one end so that their free ends 16 press on the bar. Beneath each leaf spring 14, and exposed by a slot 18 therein, is a double-ended lever 19 pivoted on a ball 20, and when a pin 27 is pressed on the end 21 of the lever, the other end 22 of the lever raises the end 16 of the spring so that a sheet 12 can be inserted. The operating pins 27 are carried by across bar 26 having brackets 28 pivoted to levers 29 secured to a shaft 30 which is rocked by a cam. The bar 13 is supported by rollers 33 at the sheet-receiving position 9. The sheet 12 is released at position 11 by a similar means comprising pins 27 carried on a bar 38 secured to a lever 39 which is fired on a shaft 40 rockable by a lever 41 which co-operates with a cam 42. Both the operating means for the grippers are situated within the arcs described by the chains 4, so that space is saved and servicing is facilitated. The modified gripper device 43, Fig. 8, comprises a cross bar 44 of sheet metal having a lower troughshaped part 45 and upper fiat part 46; a bead 47 in the length of the part 46 is supported by a V-section 48 on the part 45. Upper gripper jaws each comprise a leaf spring 49 secured at one end 50 to the bar 44 and an end 51 which presses on to the bar. The spring has a U-shaped cut 52 therein to provide a central tongue or lever 54, so that when the free end 55 of this tongue is depressed by an operating pin 27, the end 51 of the spring 49 is raised to receive a sheet 12, the bead 47 acting as a fulcrum. Sheet-registering:-Each of the brackets 28 carrying the bar 26 having the operating pins 27 thereon has a depending arm 35 adapted to enter a recess in the trailing edge of the bar 13 when the bar 26 is lowered to form a front register for the sheets 12 when they enter the gripper device.
