[Also in Group XV] A machine for binding a stack of sheets with a binding element having resilient curled fingers comprises a plurality of punches for piercing a stack of sheets and means for opening the curled fingers, the means for operating the punches and for uncurling the fingers being operated by reverse operation of a single operating lever. The machine 10 comprises a base plate 11 having a flat forward end portion, along which sheets may be slid to be punched, with a slot 12 transversely thereof for a side sheet aligning gauge. A cover 15 is provided for the punches and uncurling device, the side 18 of which has a boss 20b for rotatably receiving a shaft 21 having an operating handle 22 secured thereto by a pin 23. A die plate 24, having rectangular die apertures 25, is recessed in the base plate 11 inwardly of the front wall 19 of the casing which terminates in spaced relation with the base 11, and co-operates with rectangular die punches 26 vertically guided in a die holder and stripper 29, the stripper plate 30 of which is mounted on a spacer block 31 on the base 11, the plate 30 having apertures corresponding to die apertures 25. The guide plate 34, apertured to receive the punches 26, is secured to the upper end of a spacer block 33 on the plate 30, the punches 26 being biased to the retracted, upper position by means of individual compression springs 35 surrounding each punch and interposed between the plate 30 and a pin 36 through the punch 26. The punches 26 are operated, to perforate sheets engaging the side gauge in slot 12 and a back gauge 108, by a rocking pressure bar 37 pivotally mounted in the upper ends of rocking bars 39 by pivot pins 40, the lower ends of the links 39 being pivoted by pins 43 to brackets 41 extending each side of the base 11. The bar 37 is rocked from a shaft 53, rotatably mounted in the brackets 41 and pivoted by shaft 21 and handle 22, by cams 47 and 51 thereon having crank pins 50, 52 on which are pivoted links 45 connecting the cams with the lower ends of rocking arms 44 mounted on the pivot pins 40 inwardly of the rocking links 39. The pressure bar 37 has a shouldered arcuate recess 55 engaging the top, rounded, ends 57 of the punches 26 so that the pressure arm 37 can also pivot about the top ends 57 when the rocking arms 44 are operated by rocking of the cams 47, 51, the links 39 being rocked also so that the bar 37 exerts a vertical component of force to move the punches 26 through guide plate 34 and pierce the sheets. The connection between shaft 53 and shaft 21 may be by tongue and slot 60 with an encircling collar 61 so that the handle 22 and shaft 21 may be stored along the base. Locating pins may be provided to one side of the base where a series of punchings are required on the one set of sheets.
