Abstract
642,920. Statistical apparatus. REMING- TON RAND, Inc. July 31, 1947, No. 20835. Convention date, Dec. 4, 1940. [Class 106 (i)] [Also in Group XVI] In a tabulating machine comprising a series of type-bars set by a series of card-sensing devices, each type-bar and each sensing device has a slide extending transversely thereto, the sensing device slides are arranged to cross the type-bar slides perpendicularly and in parallel planes and each sensing device slide is operatively associated with a selected type-bar slide by interchangeable rigid connecting means. A simplified type of tabulator is disclosed operated manually by a handle 78, Fig. 5, or, in a modification, by an electric motor 154, Fig. 7. The stack of cards 10 is clamped by a spring-urged plate 42 against a supporting-plate 35 which is grooved to receive a feeding slide 48. The slide 48, Fig. 4, is operated from a cam 74 on the driving-shaft 70, through a lever 66, link 64, and lever 58, a picker lug on the slide drawing a single card from the stack and entering it between guides 54, Fig. 5, on a carrier 32. During this movement the picker lug passes along the horizontal portion of an inverted L-shaped slot 52 in the carrier; when this movement is completed the data positions in the card are in register with corresponding holes 34, Fig. 4, in the card carrier. The card and carrier are now lifted in guides 30 by the action of a second cam on the shaft 70 operating through a lever 88, bell-crank 86, and link 84, and during this movement sensing-fingers 110, Fig. 5, enter perforations in the card and, with support from the perforated back-plate, are then displaced vertically distances depending on the positions of the card perforations. Each sensing finger is integral with a horizontal slide 98, guided by grooved plates 104, and interchangeable rigid connecting rods 120, Fig. 6, transmit the movements to a further series of horizontal slides 116 disposed at right angles to the lower set and integral with type-bars 82. Thus, the type on the upper portions of the bars 82, Fig. 4, is selected in accordance with the card sensed, for printing on a sheet passing over a platen roller 126. The platen is mounted between side-plates 128 pivoted on a shaft 130, and the printing action is brought about by eccentric pins 136 rocking the platen towards the type-bars, suitable inking means being provided. A ratchet-wheel adjacent the platen roller co-operates with a stationary pawl to feed the record sheet. During the upward movement of the card carrier 32 the picker lug on the slide 48 moves in the vertical portion of the L-shaped slot 52. As the carrier moves down again the sensing-fingers, by virtue of their shape, are cammed out of the perforations, the slide 48 is returned, and the feeding of the next card pushes .the first card edgewise out of the machine.
