In a centrifugal strainer separator comprising a conical sieve drum 3 which rotates and also vibrates in an axial direction, the drum 3 is mounted on one end of a shaft 4 which projects above the drum at its other end and is there provided with a rotary drive such as a pulley 32, belts 33 and a motor 34, the shaft 4 being guided resiliently in an axial direction in the machine frame and connected to a device, such as a pair of out-ofbalance weights 47, 48, for generating axial vibrations, the device having a frequency rather less than the natural frequency of the vibrating parts of the machine. The shaft 4 is provided with an upper part 4a contained in a bearing housing 7 and bolted through flanged connections to the lower part 4, the connections gripping between them a plate 10 having three lobes each of which accommodates a double rubber buffer 11, 12, the buffers supporting resiliently the plate 10, the shaft 4 and drum 3 and the vibrator 47, 48. The vibrator assembly is anchored by a torsion spring 31 to a bracket 40 in the top 13 of the machine frame 14. A housing 17 shaped to correspond to the plate 10 covers and locates the upper ends of the buffers and supports a motor 72 which drives inter-geared discs 45, 46 on which the weights 47, 48 are mounted. The discs rotate at a speed which will produce vibrations having a frequency about 10 per cent less than the natural vibration frequency of the resiliently suspended assembly. If overloading reduces this latter frequency, the vibrator produces vibrations of greater amplitude and the rate of delivery of the material in the sieve is increased to relieve the excess load. Material shot down a shoot 52 is guided by a tube 51 to the floor of the sieve and rises up the sieve to be thrown out over a flange 37, against a rubber skirt 64 and into an annular space 61 between the walls 14 and the wall 53 of a space 56 surrounding the sieve and provided with water outlets 57. In a modification, Fig. 5, the sieve 82, its shaft 88 and pulley 89 rotate about a non-rotary spindle 96 mounted at its ends in rubber buffers 98, 103 and carrying vibrator discs 120, 121.
