Abstract

791,375. Circuits for electron multipliers. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 8, 1956 [June 11, 1955], No. 17793/56. Class 40 (6). The current in a multiplier tube is limited to a safe value by connecting a diode in series with the supply to one of the secondary emission electrodes and a resistance from that electrode to a point of lower potential. In the embodiment, a photomultiplier has the potential between anode 9 and electrodes 5 to 8 normally stabilized by gas-discharge tubes; the current in the germanium diode 21 is equal to that in resistor 22 reduced by that flowing from electrode 7. Under incidence on the cathode 2 of excessive light, the emission from electrode 7 may become sufficient to cause the voltage drop in resistor 22 to exceed that of the gas tube 17, 18, thereby cutting-off the diode 21 so that further increase in emission from electrode 7 reduces the voltage between electrodes 7 and 8, hence preventing further increase in multiplication in stages 7-8 and 8-9. The multiplication in stage 6-7 will increase slightly but further increase in the current in resistor 22 will reduce the gain by saturation. Two variable resistors 15, 16 are provided as gain controls.
