Abstract

791,234. Continuous-discharge mixing- machines. WELDING ENGINEERS, Inc. Sept. 29, 1954 [Feb. 23, 1954], No. 28126/54. Class 86 [Also in Group V] In a mixing device comprising a worm 10 disposed in a cylindrical casing 11 which extrudes material through a die 14, the worm is so constructed that the free volume of space between the worm and casing progressively increases over a predetermined length of the worm in the direction of travel of the material. This increase in volume may be achieved by increasing the pitch of the worm, as shown in Fig. 3,. or by decreasing the diameter of the worm stem, as shown at the left-hand end of Fig. 1. In a modification, the increased volume is provided at the centre of the worm. In Fig. 5, a casing 50 has double bores 51, 52 containing worms 55, 56 which are rotated in opposite directions. The worm stems are reduced between G and H. Fig. 6 shows a worm 75 which tapers from the feeding opening 84 to a restriction 86 and thereafter the stem gradually decreases in diameter, the pitch remaining constant throughout. Jackets in the casing are provided to permit temperature control of the inner wall of the casing.
