Abstract

862,941. Extruding tubes. SHELL RESEARCH Ltd. Dec. 23, 1959, No. 43791/59. Class 87(2). A process of moulding tubes from, e.g. polyethylene or p.v.c. comprises extruding the material through an orifice 8 composed of a mandrel 4 and a die 7 which are arranged so that the material flows away from the mandrel support 2 towards the orifice 8 and follows a sinuous path which over a major portion of its length is substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the die. Fig. 1 shows a die head where the material flows between a barrel 3 and shell 5, through an annular semi-circular channel 11, between shells 5, 6, through a second channel 12 and finally between the shell 5 and mandrel 4. The total length of the flow path may be three times the distance from the support 2 to the die 7 and the mean radius of the channels 11, 12 be about one tengh of the lengths of the adjacent straight portions. The mandrel 4 may be heated. Fig. 4 (not shown), shows an apparatus where the flow path turns outwardly away from the mandrel to extrude a tube of larger size than the inlet to the apparatus.
