Abstract
Effluent aqueous raffinate resulting from the organic solvent extraction of aqueous nitric acid solutions of neutron-irradiated uranium is extracted with an organic solvent in which nitric acid is soluble and the organic solvent solution of nitric acid produced is treated with water to dissolve the nitric acid. Solvents may be dibutyl phosphate, diethylene glycol dibutyl ether, or tributyl phosphate, and the latter may be diluted with a non-polar organic diluent, e.g. kerosene. The raffinate may be 3N in nitric acid and contains uranium, plutonium, and uranium fission products having b and g activity, e.g. cesium 137, whose isolation necessitates evaporation, which is difficult in the presence of nitric acid. An effluent raffinate containing nitric acid, ruthenium, zirconium, and plutonium is subjected to countercurrent extraction, preferably in a 12-stage airlift extractor with the organic solvent, the flow rate of solvent to raffinate being approximately 16: 1. The organic solvent solution may be subjected to one or more stripping stages, and is then washed with water in countercurrent, the flow rate of water being 1/4 that of the solution. The washed solvent is returned to reservoirs for reuse. The extracted raffinate was 0.13 N nitric acid and could be readily evaporated.
