Abstract
945,184. Plutonium separation. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Aug. 1,1961 [Aug. 17, 1960], No. 27905/61. Heading G6R. Plutonium is recovered by extracting an aqueous nitric acid solution of irradiated nuclear fuel with a solution of a tertiary amine in an organic solvent immiscible with water, scrubbing the organic extract with aqueous nitric acid, and then re-extracting the organic extract with an aqueous acidic solution having an acidity greater than 0À1 N and a redox potential which maintains the plutonium in the tetravalent state throughout the re-extraction. The aqueous phase from the re-extraction may be washed with a dilute tertiary amine solution in an organic solvent. The aqueous acid solution used for re-extraction is preferably a mixture of nitric acid and sulphuric acid in which the molar proportion of sulphuric acid is greater than 0À25; but as an alternative perchloric acid can be used. The tertiary amine exemplified is trilaurylamine and the organic solvent dodecane together with a minor amount of octanol-2.
