Abstract

791,035. Air &c. heaters. SUPERHEATER CO., Ltd., and PEREGRINE, E. P. March 22, 1954 [Dec. 23, 1952], No. 32634/52. Class 64(1) A high-temperature indirect-contact parallel or contra-flow heat exchanger, e.g. for heating air, comprises refractory, non- metallic heat exchange tubes, e.g. of fireclay or other ceramic material, silicon carbide, carbon or mullite, made in sections 34 joined by sleeves 35 which are ground or otherwise finished to make fluid-tight joints. The tubes are supported by radial projections on the sleeves or by radial fins on the tubes. The tubes are arranged in two banks 10, 13 connecting headers 4, 12 and 14 and located in two hot-gas passes separated by a refractory arch 18. The passes are surrounded by heat insulating material, which in one form comprises successive layers of silica brick, insulated brick and asbestos. If the heat exchanger is partly located in a pit, it is supported on a concrete or brick foundation and has at the top a shell composed of flanged sections. The air may be preliminarily heated by hot gases leaving the upper pass 10, in a metal tube or plate heat exchanger 1.
