Abstract

790,465. Friction clutches; ratchet clutches. FICHTEL & SACHS AKT.-GES. Aug. 9, 1956 [Sept. 28, 1955], No. 24426/56. Class 80 (2). A locking mechanism for a speed-responsive clutch is arranged between the engine and the driven shaft to by-pass the clutch and is arranged to be unlocked during external disengagement of the speed-responsive clutch. A centrifugal friction clutch comprises a vehicle flywheel 1 and a pressure-plate 5 moved by centrifugal weights 7 to engage a clutch friction plate 2 secured to a boss 4 splined to a driven shaft 3. The boss 4 acts as the inner member of a free-wheel having a series of sprags 20 carried in the cages 20, 22, and an outer member 19 connected to the pressure-plate 5 by a torque-limiting friction coupling 15, 16 loaded by spring 17. Axial movement of a sleeve 31 by manual or servo means causes disengagement of the centrifugal clutch through thrust bearing 30 and levers 9 pivoted on a clutch cover 6, and through a spring 29 moves a brake ring 28 to engage the cage 22 to unlock the free-wheel clutch sprags. In a modification the sprag clutch is replaced by a jamming-roller type clutch disengaged by the movement of axial pins carried by a thrust-ring behind the levers 9.
