Abstract
790,330. Four-stroke engines; charge oumos; exhaust systems. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIV-UND MASCHINENFABRIK. Sept. 23, 1955 [Sept. 27, 1954], No. 27166/55. Class 7(2) In a four-stroke engine 21, suitable for operation under conditions in which it is subjected to high-load peaks, haying means for instantaneously adjusting the fuel pump to maximum feed, e.g. as disclosed in Specification 787,439, and supercharged by a centrifugal or other compressor 10 driven by the engine or an electric motor 22, suction wave scavenging is effected by an exhaust system, preferably comprising a tube 23 of constant cross-section substantially equal to that of the or each exhaust port it serves, a diffuser 24 of gradually increasing crosssection and a receiver 25 open to atmosphere. In a single-cylinder diesel engine the cylinder exhaust outlet communicates directly with a straight tube leading to an aligned diffuser, but as shown two tubes 23 each serve a group of three diesel cylinders the scavenging periods of which do not overlap. The length of each tube 23 is preferably equal to half the speed of sound in the exhaust gases times the period between exhaust valve and inlet valve opening, and the length of each diffuser 24 half the said speed times the scavenging period of inlet and exhaust valve overlap. Each diffuser 24 has a conical angle of from 4 degrees to 12 degrees. The compressor 10 may be a piston or other positive displacement compressor, feeding the engine via a reservoir.
